Looking for low-maintenance living in Edmonton? You can’t go wrong shopping among the many condos for sale in Edmonton’s Oliver neighborhood. Located north of the river and adjacent to downtown, because Oliver is one of Edmonton’s older neighborhoods it offers not only convenience to shopping, dining and outdoor recreation, but some gorgeous architecture as well.
Although many folks assume that the homes in Oliver are vintage (it is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, after all), only 14.5 percent were built prior to 1960. In the 60s, Oliver experienced a surge in redevelopment, ushering in many of the high-rise condos you’ll see while shopping for a home for sale in Oliver. In fact, condos and apartments in buildings with more than five stories comprise 66 percent of the neighborhood’s housing stock.
This doesn’t mean you can’t find a single-family residence for sale in Oliver – but you’ll need to move quickly when one is listed on the Oliver real estate market. Home prices in Oliver vary according to the size, age and amenities offered. While we do have our share of moderately priced condos (ideal for the first-time buyer), you’ll also find some luxury condos with yummy amenities to match
Schools in Oliver
There is one public school located in the neighborhood, Oliver School, one of the oldest school buildings in Edmonton. The red-brick, three-story school first opened its doors in 1911 (although the school was constructed in 1910). Additions have been added over the more-than one century since its construction, including a $3.5 million upgrade in 1999. Oliver School is designated as a Heritage B site.
Oliver School serves children in grades Kindergarten through 6. The on-site Nellie McClung Girls’ Junior High program teaches girls in grades 7 through 9.
From shopping and dining to outdoor recreation, Oliver has a lot to offer residents. Jasper Avenue, which bisects Oliver, offers services, shops and eateries and you’ll find additional opportunities along 124 Street. Many residents shop at the Oliver Square centers for groceries, office supplies and more, or stop in for a bite to eat at one of the shopping centers’ restaurants.
If your idea of the perfect weekend includes at least one round of golf, you will love Oliver’s proximity to Victoria Golf Course and Driving Range. Canada’s oldest city-run track, the 18-hole, 5,875-yard par 71 course is ideal for beginners as well as handicap players. Best of all, it’s just minutes from Oliver, over its southern border.
Oliver is also home to several parks. If you have children, let them loose at the spray park at Kitchener Park. Victoria Park, south of the neighborhood, offers horseshoe, baseball and cricket facilities, walking, biking, skating and running paths and gorgeous picnic areas. In the winter you’ll appreciate being so close to the snow-shoeing, skating and cross-country skiing opportunities in the park.
An avid bicyclist? Soon, Oliver will be connected to Downtown and Glenora via a bike route, slated for completion in late 2017.
Finally, if you commute to work, the neighborhood is quite close to the Grandin LRT station.
